COLUMBUS - Anxious youth gathered at the local track to participate in the 23rd annual Kids Fun Run.
The 2015 Downtown Runaround kicked off Friday evening at 7:30 when about two-hundred Columbus kids came to the Pawnee Park Track in preparation for the 1-mile Junior Runaround.
Apart of the Downtown Runaround Committee, Bob Lauterbach, was happy with the enthusiasm that surrounded the race.
“At the start line, they were all smiling and ready to go. They look different when they finish, but they are all expecting to win at the start line, there so, it's a lot of fun for them,” Lauterbach says. “It's a good safe run, they used to be with the adults, but we speared it off into a kids run alone, so it's a much safer run for them.”
12-year-old Trevor Niedbelski passed the finish line first at the race, though all participants are winners in the heart of the event.
Refreshments were available as well as a table full of prizes that were awarded with a luck-of-the-draw. 10-year-old Kaylee Gerber happened to be one of the lucky ones picked.
“I won sand toys,” Gerber says.
The 30th annual Downtown Runaround will take place Saturday morning with the five mile run starting at 8:00 a.m. and the 2.1 mile run starting at 8:05 a.m.
