COLUMBUS - Runners beat the heat and hopefully their best times, as they hit the streets for the 30th annual Downtown Runaround.
Co-Assistant Race Director Ed Wagner says they had between 700 and 800 runners attend this years Top Run event. Wagner says the Downtown Runaround started in 1986, and because Top Gun was the highest grossing movie that year, it became the inspiration for this years event theme.
“It will be probably about an hour before we get everybody in, some of them will finish in about a five minute pace for these five mile runners, so they'll be in here in a half hour.” Says Wagner, “But then we have an awards ceremony, we give out lots of awards in different categories of ages and so on, and then we give away prizes. We have a special thing this year, anyone who's been in this race thirty years, we're going to give them some special recognition.”
Wagner says there are seventeen runners who have participated all thirty years the race has been around, and hopes they can continue to host successful races in the future.
