COLUMBUS - A long time Platte County Employee and Columbus native is retiring after working in the Highway Department for almost 31 years.
Assistant Highway Superintendent Fred Liss was honored at Platte County's Board of Commissioners meeting Tuesday. A resolution was passed to honor and thank Liss for his many years of service, both as Highway Superintendent and Assistant Highway Superintendent.
“Well I've got mixed emotions obviously, there's some sadness involved with it, but there's also, I'm looking forward to starting the next chapter of my life,” says Liss.
County board members thanked Liss for his service to the county and members like Chairman Jim Scow have been working alongside Liss since before he began his job in the Highway Department. Scow says Liss previously worked at Gilmore & Associates Inc. whose offices were located in the same building as Scow's CPA firm.
“He took a lot of knowledge from Gilmore, which is a very good engineering firm, and really helped the county out,” says Scow,” I think his knowledge of the Highway Superintendent job far exceeds most other Highway Superintendents in the state of Nebraska.”
Liss says he's really enjoyed his time in the department and says he has taken pleasure in being able to serve the public over his tenure.
“Well I got a few things I got to catch up with work at home and that type of thing, but I'm an avid outdoorsmen,” says Liss,” and I'm looking forward to going out and spending a lot of time out in the river where I grew up.”
