LINCOLN - Former executive director Jim Tenopir is returning to the Nebraska School Activities Association as interim director.
Tenopir headed the NSAA for nine years before the National Federation of State High School Association hired him in 2010. He was that group's chief operating officer, retiring last month.
The NSAA was in need of a leader after Rhonda Blanford-Green resigned in June after three years on the job. The NSAA board in May voted against adding a year to her existing contract that was to end in May 2016, and reached a $240,000 settlement with her upon her resignation.
After graduating from Sterling (Kan.) College in 1970, Tenopir began a 40-year career in education as a teacher and coach at Otis-Bison High in Otis, Kan. He moved to Nebraska in 1972 as a teacher and coach at McCook Junior High and worked in Nebraska for 38 years.
In 1974, Tenopir moved into administration as athletic director at McCook High School and served in that position for eight years. He was activities director and assistant principal at Scottsbluff High School for one year before beginning an 18-year stint as superintendent of the Cambridge Public Schools.
After Tenopir left in 2010, the NSAA interim director for two years was retired Blair superintendent Steve Shanahan. Blanford-Green followed him.
