COLUMBUS - Area fifth graders are learning the importance of leadership at home and in the classroom. The 38th “Leadership Skills You Never Outgrow Day” kicked off at Ag Park Tuesday, where area 5th graders had their leadership skills put to the test. 4-H Youth Coordinator Jody Wendt says the program is a great way for kids to learn more about themselves, find out what leadership skills they already have, and to learn new leadership skills as well. “Since they're fifth graders, they're really starting to discover who they are and maybe how they fit in within their classroom, within their school, the different activities they enjoy doing, and the free time.” Jody says, “so learning how to be a leader amongst all those things is very important” Kids performed different tasks within their groups that required some form of physical or mental focus, in addition to cooperation and leadership. This is the second year they have done the program in this format, versus in individual classrooms, and Wendt says its great that kids get a chance to interact with other fifth graders from around Platte County.
