PONCA - Over the river and through the woods, to Ponca State Park we go!
This weekend is the annual Outdoor Expo at Ponca State Park, and Friday was the School Day Invitational.
Event Coordinator at Ponca State Park Lynn Mellick says the state park became the classroom of close to 900 5th graders.
“Today is geared towards school kids. It's a School Day Invitational, we invite fifth graders from throughout the area to come out and experience the wilderness in a classroom-like outdoor setting.”
Some students spent two hours on the bus to get to Ponca, which may pale in comparison to the distance some Nebraskans drive for the event this weekend.
Through the park will be filled with experienced outdoors-man, the Outdoor Expo is meant for everyone. Beyond the shooting ranges, the expo is set up to introduce anyone to new outdoor activities.
“We have kayaking. We have fishing, we just stocked the pond two days ago with 1,500 Rainbow Trout so people can come out and fish. We have bow fishing, if you've never tried that it's a perfect opportunity to experience those things for the first time and decide 'maybe I like that or maybe I don't'.”
The only cost this weekend is a five dollar parking pass, and the event runs through Sunday.
