COLUMBUS - The Columbus Police Department is encouraging citizens to buckle up. Beginning Tuesday, CPD will be conducting a seat belt enforcement campaign in the hopes of preventing fatality accidents and reducing injuries. Due to a $6,600 grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety, additional officers to patrol and set up vehicle checkpoints will be used to help raise awareness and encourage seatbelt use. Studies indicate that seat belts can reduce the risk of death or serious injury from a crash by nearly 50 percent. The special enforcement will run through August 18th. Nebraska Seat Belt Laws: -No driver shall operate a motor vehicle unless the driver and each front seat passenger wear a seat belt. -All children, regardless of weight, 5 years of age or younger, must be in a child safety seat. -All Children, regardless of seating position, ages 6-17 must use a seat belt. -All people, regardless of age or seating position, must wear a seat belt when being transported by a driver who possesses a school permit, learner's permit or provisional operator's permit.
