NORFOLK - With the recent rash of violent attacks against police officers…Norfolk resident Wendy Holmes said she wanted to do something to show her support for those who've sworn to serve and protect.
"Something in me said 'I have to give thanks publicly,'" Holmes said. "We decide what our community is. We make that decision. We set the tone. We make the culture.”
Holmes turned to social media, asking residents to show up Tuesday night at shift change and applaud the officers as they left the building. Holmes' call was answered…as over 100 people showed up to show their appreciation.
Organizers say there was nothing political about the gathering, but rather they just wanted to give the public an opportunity a chance top show their appreciation to Norfolk Police. It's a sentiment that police say is mutual.
"To walk out that door and see all those people out there standing start clapping, it just really tugs at your heart," said Norfolk Police Chief Bill Mizner.
Holmes says she was overjoyed by the turnout.
“I'm overwhelmed," said Holmes. “I'm impressed. I love this community. I'm not surprised by the turnout, but I'm impressed by it. I'm encouraged,"
She adds that those who didn't make it Tuesday night can still show their admiration in a number of ways.
"Get a thank you card and pass it around the office, church or wherever, and get it sent in and these guys will get an ongoing thank you from the city," Holmes said.
However residents decide to show their appreciation Norfolk Police say the message is being received…loud and clear.
