COLUMBUS - Even through the aftermath of winter storm Kayla, area producers were able to attend this year's Nebraska Farm and Life Expo being held at Ag Park Local Farm Director Susan Littlefield says the expo began on Wednesday and had a delayed start, due to the storm, but says she's happy with the turnout. “It's a great opportunity for livestock producers to be able to check out some of the latest in technology that's happening ag industry, they get to hear some great speakers. For many of them, they can do the checklist,” says Littlefield. One item on the checklist for some farmers is renewing their restricted use pesticide license, a course that takes approximately two hours. Nebraska Extension's Allan Vyhnalek says farmers need to retake this training every three years, and that approximately 100 producers from Platte and surrounding counties attended this years event. “The training will be bigger next year because that's the third year of the cycle where the farmers first started back in 1978 or 1979,” says Vyhnalek, “and the point is that'll be the third, that anniversary and then so we'll have a bigger, bigger turnout next year.” Littlefield says the producers got the chance to hear from great speakers like Ag and Investment's Sue Martin who traveled from Webster City, Iowa. “Those ag producers have been out there in the blizzard working hard, while folks were nice and nestled up warm in their house on school off days, because of the snow days,” says Littlefield, “our ag producers were some of them waist deep in snow, cleaning out bunks to be able to feed and care for their livestock. So if you see an ag producer, know somebody that's in agriculture, just take that few moments to stop and say thanks.”
