Nebraska point guard Rachel Theriot was selected as one of 30 candidates across the country for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award in NCAA Division I women's basketball, the Senior CLASS Award announced on Tuesday.
Theriot is one of just three Big Ten student-athletes named to the list of candidates, joining her former club teammate and current Maryland center Malina Howard, and Ohio State guard Cait Craft.
Each of the 30 candidate classes will be narrowed to 10 finalists in February, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplify excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. Also on the list is Creighton University's Marissa Janning. Currently sidelined as she recovers from a broken bone in her left leg, Janning has played in six games for the Bluejays this season. Janning has amassed a combined 1,563 points in 104 games during her career. On the men's side, Nebraska's Shavon Shield was named, as well. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Shields and the Huskers return to action Wednesday evening, as the Huskers take on No. 11 Michigan State. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on AM 1340 KHUB with the Husker Sports Network.
The Omaha men's basketball team returns to the road this week, visiting Denver on Thursday, Jan. 21. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. (CT) at Magness Arena in Denver, Colo.
