LINCOLN - Three state football champions will be crowned Monday.
Among the games is the Class D2 championship game pitting 11-1 Humphrey St. Francis against 12-0 Chambers/Wheeler Central. It's a rematch, as the Renegades surprised many at the time by beating the Flyers 28-6 back on September 18th. St. Francis Head Coach Eric Kessler says that CWC's speed is the key. He adds that he expects his team to be ready for a much closer bout this time around.
“Our kids know how good they are,” Kessler said. “What happened in the game when you watch that film, you say 'Those guys are really good.' I think that's good for our kids to know that we will have to play our best game to be in the game.”
Chambers/Wheeler Central head coach Tom Thramer says that even in that 22-point win over St. Francis, he saw things that the Renegades will have to shore up to win their first ever title.
“We showed our kids 'These things we did well, these things they were able to beat us at,'” Thramer said. “We're going to have to really work on geting better at those things as well as staying good at the things we did.”
The Class D2 state championship game kicks off at 2:45 p.m.
St. Francis is making their eighth championship appearance overall, and looking for their fourth title. Chambers/Wheeler Central is making their first championship game appearance. Chambers won the Class D2 state title on their own in 2007.
