COLUMBUS - Friends and family of Scott Flyr are showing how much heart they have by hosting a benefit to raise money for his heart transplant.
When Scott was 30 he was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. For ten years doctors treated the disease with medications until he was asked to go see a specialist in Rochester, Minnesota.
Tests revealed that Scott would need a heart transplant. On May 5, 2015 Scott and his wife Misty got the call that they had found a heart for him and he went through with a successful transplant the very next day.
Misty was in disbelief and to this day is still in awe of the entire experience.
“The greatest experience up there is they line all the doctors and nurses up along the hallway and they clap and cheer you on for your new heart and it was something that was just so unreal. You still sometimes say did this really happen? Did he really get the transplant already? I don't know how to explain it, you just can't think about how this has actually gone down,” said Misty.
Scott has been moved by the outpouring of support shown by the city.
“It's been amazing. More than what we've ever expected. Columbus is a great town, a lot of businesses have donated to the benefit and all of our family and friends have been so supportive. I couldn't ask for a better town, Columbus has been great,” exclaimed Scott.
The benefit to aid the Flyrs' with their medical costs will be held from 6 p.m. to midnight this Saturday, November 14 at the Eagles Club.
Hosted by family and friends there will be a spaghetti feed that is free will donation, raffles, silent auctions, t-shirt and bracelet sales and a live band.
Some of the items that have been donated for the raffle include a Husker Helicopter ride, a gift card to Husker House, and football, volleyball, and University of Nebraska-Omaha hockey tickets.
