LINCOLN, Neb. - A Columbus youth's wishes were granted this weekend in Lincoln.
Mathew Dinslage is an amazing six year old kid with a passion for helping others.
When he found out he would be spending the day as a vet at Ehlers Animal Care he was elated.
The vets at Ehlers said they were equally as excited.
“I feel like the lucky one,” said veterinarian Megan Ehlers. “Our staff feels like the luckiest group of people to get to do this.”
Nothing was too tough for Mathew.
“We let him do anything he's comfortable doing,” said Ehelers. “We let him watch surgery. We let him bathe dogs. He's watched us clean teeth. He's helped us hold animals.”
This time last year Mathew was recovering from a bone marrow transplant.
His parents said this day is a dream come true for them as well.
“Just thinking back to where we were one year ago. His hair was starting to fall out, he was starting to feel sick from the chemo,” said Mathew's mother, Krystal Dinslage. “So to see him up and watching a surgery is amazing.”
Over the weekend Mathew was able to travel all around Lincoln with The Make-A-Wish Foundation.
He went golfing, learned how to cook and even went horse back riding. It was all building up Monday's grand finale: A brand new puppy.
The pup was Mathew's last patient, little did he know it was also a surprise gift.
He said he cant wait to get home and play with his newest pal, Lilly.
