NORFOLK - As of November 1st, the enrollment period for 2016 Health insurance begins and one local health center is helping with the application process for those that need to enroll.
At Midtown Health Center in Norfolk, there are trained certified application counselors, like Elaine Avila, ready to guide people through the application process so they have the proper coverage this upcoming year
"Those who don't have health insurance, for 2016, there would be a penalty of 695 dollars or 2.5" says Elaine Avila.
Being uninsured can be catastrophic to families burdened by sudden medical bills. Kathy Nordby, Executive Director at the Midtown Health Center, mentions how The Affordable Care Act can benefit those with low income.
"So going without health insurance is a risk, checking through the enrollment period to see if it makes sense to eliminate that risk because there are adjustments available for people that are low income," says Nordby.
The Midtown Clinic has interview rooms where the counselors like Elaine can help you or your family get the right coverage, and don't worry you don't need to be a patient of the clinic to receive assistance.
Kathy Nordby said, "you don't have to be a patient of the clinic, i think they placed it with us because we do provide primary access to healthcare for a large population who are uninsured or underinsured and so it is a natural place for us to help people that are trying to seek healthcare.”
For coverage to be effective January 1st, you need to be enrolled by December 15th, Midtown Health Center is helping with enrollment all month, but will be holding an event on November 18th called Day of Action: Open Enrollment.
