COLUMBUS - County officials are exploring the idea of hiring a county engineer. The Platte County Board of Supervisors met Tuesday morning and saved the biggest topic of discussion for last, which was a report that evaluated the county's highway department. The report was conducted by two Nebraska Department of Roads officials, and the supervisors' conversation centered around the idea that Assistant Highway Superintendent Fred Liss may be retiring at the end of the year; something the report indicated. Supervisor Jerry Engdahl says the news came as a surprise to the board. document.createElement('audio'); http://media3.floodradio.com/columbus/2015/07/Engdahl-SOT-1.mp3   “Fred's been a great guy for the county, and he's going to be hard to replace. The matter is, if he really is going to retire at the end of the year, we need to start now figuring out how to find a replacement.” Engdahl said one of the recommendations from the report was to hire a county engineer as opposed to contracting an engineer for every county road and bridge project. After discussion the board passed a motion requiring the Platte County Road and Bridge Committee to create a county engineer job description which supervisors will review at a future meeting before further action is taken. Supervisors next meet August 11th.
